History of the website.

The website is now 12 years old. It first appeared in August 1999 as a small website containing a few articles about local history. Since those days it has grown to be the largest local history website in the country. I hope you will continue to enjoy your future visits to the site.

Forthcoming Events

CBA (Council for British Archaeology) West Midlands is holding the annual "News from the Past" day school in the Birmingham Central Library Theatre on Saturday 17 March, 2012. Details will be given on the website at www.britarch.ac.uk/cbawm/meetings.php as they become available.

The Festival of Black Country Vehicles will be held at the Black Country Living Museum on Sunday the 29th July 2012. Read about the event.


The latest additions to the website over the last year:

February 12: Additions have been made to the story of Jensen cars in the museum transport hall. A fine photo of the old Darlaston Branch line has been added to Recent Times in  A Brief History of Darlaston, and a football team photo has been added to the history of Pinfold Street Primary School. A new addition to Lives of Local People is the story of seven priests who served as vicar at St. Matthew's Church, Wolverhampton during the period 1846 to 1945. A new addition to The Story of Walsall is Churches and Religion the story of Christian worship in the town.

January 12: New additions to A Brief History of Darlaston are  the story of Darlaston's windmills in Early Growth, population details in Years of Growth, football and trams in Into the 20th Century, Billy Muggins in Recent Times, a street party in World War 2, and the evolution of local pubs in Darlaston Pubs. The Story of Walsall has been extended with the addition of Roads, Canals and Railways.

December 11: The story of B. Billingham Limited has been added to the exhibition transport hall, and additions have been made to the industry section in Willenhall Through the Ages. An article about Cyrus Price has been added to the Gazetteer of lock and key makers, along with pages from the 1907 Cyrus Price catalogue. A new addition to The Story of Walsall is The 18th Century. Notable People in A Brief History of Darlaston has been updated. A new addition to the Darlaston section is a version of Joseph Welch's map of 1838 which can be accessed from the Darlaston articles menu. Details about Willenhall's Old Hall have been added to the Local Personalities and Prominent Families section in Willenhall Through the Ages.

November 11: Two sections have been added to The Story of Walsall - The 16th and 17th centuries and Early Industries. The Wearwell 1932 cycle catalogue has been added to the Wearwell section in the museum transport hall. The story of A. Bellamy & Co. Ltd. has been added to the museum food hall. A new engineering hall has been added to the museum. The first two exhibits are the story of Wolverhampton Die Casting Company Limited and the story of the Star Aluminium Company Limited.

October 11: A new article about Wednesbury's municipal housing schemes has been added to the Wednesbury menu. The Darlaston Bolt & Nut Company has been added to the Darlaston Industries section in A Brief History of Darlaston, and the Notable People page has been updated. A new addition to Lives of Local People is The Incomparable Joe Davies. A new addition to the articles menu and religion is the story of Richard Twentyman and his churches. Additions have been made to the story of Horseley Fields Chemical Works in the industry along the canal section. The story of  Edwin Richards & Sons in the industry section of the history of Wednesbury has been updated. Part two, The Medieval Village has been added to The Story of Walsall.

September 11: Willenhall Through the Ages has been updated. Additions have been made to Local Government, and Life in the 19th Century. Additions have been made to Into the 20th Century, and Iron and Steel Making in A Brief History of Darlaston. Part one of The Story of Walsall has been added to the Walsall Menu in the Black Country Towns section. The following sections in the history of Wednesbury have been updated: electrical equipment manufacturersF. H. Lloyd, industry, Edwin Richards & Sons, and churches. Additions have been made to the story of Jensen cars in the museum transport hall James Fellows and Company in the museum metalware hall, A.J.S. radios in the museum electronic engineering hall, and Lodges and Gatehouses in interesting buildings. A slightly different, and hopefully improved home page has been added.

August 11: A new addition to the articles menu, and local areas menu is the story of Tettenhall Church. A new page about Darlaston war memorial has been added to the Darlaston at war section in A Brief History of Darlaston, and the G.K.N. page has been extended. There are two new additions to the vehicle rallies section, the 2011 Festival of Black Country Vehicles, and the 2011 Turner Sports Car Rally. The story of Swallow motor scooters in the museum transport hall has been updated. Seven new articles have been added to The Wolverhampton Railway Gazette in the exhibition transport hall trains menu. A new addition to the articles menu is information about the Wolverhampton and Walsall Historic Environment Record.

July 11: Further additions have been made to the industry section in the history of Wednesbury including the story of Edwin Richards & Sons. The story of Charles Aubin in the Gazetteer of Lock and Key Makers has been updated. A new and longer version of Darlaston at war has been added to A Brief History of Darlaston. The story of the telephone exchange has been added to the museum other trades hall. A Walsall menu has been added to Black Country Towns. It lists a new article about Walsall General (Sister Dora) Hospital. A new addition to the articles menu is Tettenhall the bright green borderland.

June 11: Additions have been made to the following pages in the story of A.J.S. motorcycles in the museum transport hall: Stevens family graves, and Erecting Shop and 1927 models. Additions have also been made to the story of Kieft cars, and to the industry section in the history of Wednesbury. The following pages in A Brief History of Darlaston have also been updated: Into the 20th Century, and Notable People. The search facility on the home page has been updated. A new addition to working life in the community section, and the museum other trades hall is the story of the great strike of 1850-51.

May 11: Photographs of the Salvation Army in Darlaston, and a report on children and young people in 1841 have been added to A Brief History of Darlaston. A new addition to the food hall in the museum is G. H. Kidson, the grocer's wholesaler. Additions have been made to the story of Sunbeam commercial vehicles, L.V.L. coaches, E.C.C. buses and trams, and Sunbeam buses in the museum transport hall. The following additions have been made to the buses and coaches menu, also in the transport hall; the story of Bean buses and coaches, Jensen coaches, Elwell-Parker trams, Star coaches, and a chronology of the industry.

April 11: A new addition to Old Photographs and Images of Wolverhampton and the Surrounding Area is David Clare's Wolverhampton Photo Album part 5 - North Street and the Surrounding Area. The following sections in the museum transport hall have been updated: Bean cars, Clyno cars, Lawrence Jackson cars, Star cars, Sunbeam cars 1, Sunbeam cars 2, Stevens motorcycles, Kieft scooters and mopeds, Sunbeam lorries and vans, and Diamond commercial vehicles. New additions to the commercial vehicles section in the transport hall are a chronology of manufacturingBean commercial vehicles, Jensen commercial vehicles and Morris trucks and vans.

March 11: New additions to The history of Willenhall are Public Houses and Into the 20th Century. A Willenhall menu has been added to Black Country Towns, which includes Old Willenhall Postcards, and articles about Portobello. The story of Briton commercial vehicles and Star commercial vehicles in the commercial vehicle section in the museum transport hall has been updated. Two new additions to the articles section are ABCD Heritage Trails and The Bilston Trail.
