C1600; late C19m or C20 alterations and additions. Timber frame
with roughcast brick infill and roughcast wing ... Interior has
timber-framed cross walls; stop-chamfered beams; room ... has dado
panelling; simple contemporary stair; exposed wattle and daub panel on
first floor.
Comment:
Although technically the whole house is listed, what is of
interest is the original half-timbered part. The present
owner tells me that this was built in 1627 and that the wing to
the right in the top photo was built in 1927. Just visible
to the left of the photo to the right is an unfortunately
designed extension of 1958.
In the days when Wrottesley Road was the main turnpike out of
Wolverhampton, this building was used as a toll house - hence
its present name.
In Victorian times it seems to have stood in
extensive grounds of about 14 acres, when numerous then-exotic trees
were planted, many of which are still to be seen in the present
gardens and the now surrounding suburbia.
