Guy Lorries.

There is a superabundance of pictures of Guy lorries on
this and two more pages. The link to the other two pages is at the
foot of this page.
The photos shown on this page come from a private
collection of photos. It seems that these photos were originally
gathered by or on behalf of Guy Motors, some time in the later 50s,
apparently for advertising purposes. Some of them seem to be
photographic copies of photographs. Some of the pictures are taken
from advertising brochures. The purpose they serve here is to show
something of the range of bodies which were put on Guy chassis. If
anyone has any further details of the origins of these photos, or of
what they show, the Curator would be glad to hear from them.

| A photograph, retouched for advertising purposes,
of the Goliath. (The cab window did not really have a
brick wall in it - the retoucher has failed to remove a
reflection). |

 |
Another advertising shot for the Otter. |
| Note the big chrome letters G on the front. |

|
 |
This photo was taken about 1956, possibly on Guy's
factory premises. |
| The vehicle on the right has a notice in the windscreen
saying it is a 1922 17hp 25cwt lorry, restored by Guy student
apprentices, 1957 |

|
 |
There is no number plate on this Otter. The
photo is probably one of Guy's own shots, and was taken outside
a local pub, the Paget Arms. |
| The fascia on the building reads "Oldland Motor Body
Builders Ltd, phone Bitton 2132". Presumably they were at
Bristol and have just bodied this Guy. |

|
 |
This Otter is owned by Smith & Beaumont, Sandeed,
Hebden Bridge. The sign of the side of the flatbed read
"Yorkshire Scotland Service". |
| Both lorries owned by F & K Transport, Hyde Park
Garage, North Valley Road, Colne and presumably outside their
premises. On the left: fleet number 3, vehicle registration
UTD660. On the right: fleet number 2, vehicle registration
UTC665. |

|
 |
An Otter, in livestock transport mode, owned by C.
W. Raw, East Cowton, North Allerton. |
| Owned by J. W. Capstaff Ltd., Transport Contractor,
Newcastle on Tyne. Fleet number 82, vehicle registration HJR
856. |

|
 |
Seven Guy lorries, owned by Mudd's, a well known
fish processing companym at the North Wall of Grimsby Fish
Docks The registration numbers are: EEE183, EJV597,
FEE276, FEE764, FJV850, FJV661, FEE599. (The tower in the
background still stands. It once housed a hydraulic system for
opening lock gates).
(Thanks to Steve Richards of the Grimsby Telegraph for
identifying the locale and the owners).

| Montague Burton, the tailor of taste. Burtons
were early exponents of the full Wilf Ollins corporate image, long
before Wilf Ollins. Their shops were built to their own design
as were the vans and lorries. |

|
 |
Broughs of Liverpool and Speke seem to sell KCC
drums and are anxious that everyone knows it. Empty oil drums
are bulky but light, so this pantechnicon version of the Wolf was
very suitable. |
| Baldwins of Gravesend are removalists, so the
pantechnicon body on an Otter suited them and also served as a
mobile advertising hoarding, a practice endemic in the removals
industry. |

|
 |
Tipper lorry, vehicle registration XMB392, looks as
if it has just been delivered to R.M.Gibson & Co. Ltd., of Little
Leigh, Northwich. |
| And here they are pretending to put it through its
paces - the interior is immaculate! |

|
 |
Most publicity shots were taken outside dignified
looking buildings or impressive park gates. P. G. Walton of
Gateshead on Tyne are properly happy with what is, probably, outside
their factory gates. On the left: fleet number 15, vehicle
registration LNL167. On the right, fleet number 17, vehicle
registration LTY583. |
| Flatbed Guy Invincible, owned by F & K Transport of
Colne. Fleet number 3, vehicle registration UTD660. |

|
 |
Guy Invincible as a tipper. Owned by F. C.
Ames Ltd. of Clitheroe. Vehicle registration WTJ937. |
| Drop side Invincible, owned by F.C. Ames Ltd., of
Clitheroe. Vehicle registration VTB317. |

|
 |
An Invincible, presumably bodied to carry milk
churns or possibly cattle. Masters Dairy Pty. Ltd. - is
this South African? |
| Guy Otter owned by Chance Brothers of Smethwick, the
famous glass company. Fleet number 11, no vehicle registration. |

|
 |
Another Otter in special purpose delivery form, for
Schweppes. Vehicle registration KBU627. |
| An Otter bodied as a delivery van for the John Lewis
Partnership and Waitrose Ltd. |

|
 |
An Otter as a tipper. The owner's name on the
cab side reads "Munch". |
| According to a Guy advertising brochure, this Otter
is a mobile bank. |

|
 |
With an 8 tonner Guy Warrior, Goodall Backhouse of
Leeds obviously intended to shift a lot of Yorkshire Relish. Vehicle
registration XUB268 |
| A row of Vixen tipper trucks lined-up outside the
Paget Arms in July 1952.
