The Electric Construction Company

The E.C.C. was one of the town's largest employers and in its heyday was one of the country's most important electrical equipment manufacturers. It started in a humble way, when Thomas Parker, the inventive genius, joined forces with Paul Bedford Elwell, who ran the Patent Tip & Horseshoe Company in Commercial Road. The new company was set up in a small corner of the Commercial Road premises and was an instant success. By the end of the century the company had a large new works, employed over 1,000 people and sold its products throughout much of the world.
